Attractions in Milan

As one of the largest and most important cities in Italy, Milan offers innumerable attractions for visitors to enjoy. The following information is only a sample of some of the most prominent must-see sites in Milan.

Lovers of history and architecture will be interested in touring Milan's many historic churches. Although much of Milan's architecture is fairly modern, the city also contains some of the oldest churches in Europe, as well as masterpieces from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The cathedral, or "Duomo," is a breathtaking work of art that also offers an amazing view of the city. Santa Maria delle Grazie is another noteworthy church; it contains the renowned "Last Supper" painting by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Another historical site worth seeing is the Castello Sforzesco, which once served as the palace of the rulers of Milan.

Milan can boast of a large number of museums, and has an especially diverse collection of art museums. The Pinacoteca di Brera is perhaps the foremost example, and contains an impressive collection of paintings from many areas. For those who want to take in even more culture, there is the La Scala Theater, one of the world's great opera houses, which has been in operation for well over three centuries.

Milan's rich historical and cultural treasures provide many with reason enough to visit the city, but for others, the chief attraction will be the incredible shopping opportunities. Milan is perhaps the most modern, commercially oriented city in Italy, and is one of the most prominent centers of fashion in the world. The largest shopping district is found in "Fashion Quadrangle," which contains a multitude of high-end clothing shops. Armani, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, and Gucci all have major presences in Milan. There are also many other unique places to shop. 10 Corso Como, a large shopping complex with a great variety of things to buy, is just one example.

For those looking to partake of Milan's nightlife, Como Avenue and the Navigili quarter are two excellent starting points, but good bars, restaurants, and cafes can also be found elsewhere.

Other nearby attractions, such as Lake Como and Lake Garda, can easily be reached from Milan by train.
